Matter to Life Fall Days

The program will start on 1. October in the morning and finish on 2. October in the afternoon.

It will include a workshop on
Brain organoids as paradigms of ‘synthetic’ systems

This workshop delves into the ethical landscape surrounding the rapidly advancing field of human brain organoids. The construction of neural organoids is associated with the aim to model the development of human brain. As these lab-grown brain tissues, also known as "mini-brains," replicate the complexity of human neurobiology, they open unprecedented avenues for studying brain development and disease. However, they also raise profound ethical (and legal) questions that must be addressed to ensure responsible scientific progress. This workshop aims at promoting informed and responsible decision-making in the development and application of brain organoids. To this end, an interdisciplinary dialogue among scientists, ethicists, legal experts, and policymakers is required.
