How fast can one tunnel into chaos?

It is known for more than 80 years that quantum particles perform actions that are forbidden classically, like tunneling through a potential barrier. Tunneling from a region of classical regular dynamics to a region of chaotic dynamics, however, still is quantitatively and conceptually an open problem. Recent developments towards a theory for these so-called dynamical tunneling rates will be presented. Consequences for eigenfunctions, energy spectra, and for electromagnetic cavities will be discussed.
