Photosynthesis - ultrafast reactions for highly efficient energy conversion

The first reaction steps in photosynthesis involve ultrafast charge separation and electron transfer in the photosynthetic reaction centre. Ultrafast spectroscopy on a series of native and modified reactions centres has shown that these reactions occur as stepwise electron transfer processes where a high reaction speed leads to the extreme optimisation of the system.
