Spatially resolved observation of dipole-dipole interaction between cold Rydberg atoms

Ben van Linden van den Heuvell
University of Amsterdam, NL
Experiments are performed on dipole-dipole interaction between cold Rydberg atoms, according to the scheme 41d+49s <-> 42p+49p. New is that the excitation of the 41d atoms is spatially separated from the excitation of the 49s atoms. The process is studied as a function of distance between the production volumes, time that the interaction occurs and exactness of the resonance condition.
