The Magnus expansion for laser-matter interaction

We formulate a gauge-invariant approach based on the Magnus expansion to the problem of nonrelativistic interaction of laser pulses with atomic systems in the single-active-electron approximation and consider its performance comparing it directly to ab-initio numerical calculations. Terms of the Magnus expansion up to third order in pulse duration are explicitly evaluated. Connections to other approaches are also given. Finally, we demonstrate that this approach is capable of description of time-resolved dynamics.
