Femtosecond spectroscopy in general allows tracing molecular changes on the ultimate chemical time scale given by cycle times of molecular vibrations. Femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) adds the inherent sensitivity of vibrational spectroscopy towards molecular structures. A brief overview of the technique will be given. Studies from other labs and our own on the mechanisms of photoreaction occurring in photochemistry and photobiology will be reviewed.
