Atoms in magnetic and electric fields: A journey through the past and an outlook into the future

Peter Schmelcher
Universität Hamburg
Harald Friedrich is one of the founding fathers of the research field of atoms in strong magnetic fields. We will show how his early works have inspired a number of different research directions ranging from the analysis of the atmospheres of magnetic white dwarfs, modern semiclassical physics of strong field systems to the signatures of quantum chaos in the latter. Then, we will take the route towards highly excited Rydberg atoms in combined fields and demonstrate the unusual properties of strongly decentered giant dipole states. Our pathway will lead us from singly and multiply excited atomic states to the very recently addressed giant dipole molecular states of ultra-long range character.
