Dynamics of interatomic processes triggered by multiphoton absorption schemes

The recent availability of intense and ultrashort extreme ultraviolet sources opens up the possibility of investigating ultrafast electronic relaxation processes in matter in an unprecedented regime. At present, the unique characteristics of seeded FEL pulses (narrow bandwidth, spectral stability, and tunability) allow one to resonantly trigger specific interatomic processes in the multiphoton absorption regimes. In this work we report a theoretical investigation of the interatomic Coulombic decay in neon dimers by FEL radiation. We propose two alternative schemes to trigger ICD by multiphoton absorption. The schemes are proven to be much more efficient than with single-photon absorption of sufficiently large frequency as used until now. Results of experimental verification of the theoretically proposed ionization schemes will also be discussed.
