A quantitative model of brain activity is discussed that spans the range of physiological and anatomical scales from microscopic synapses to the whole brain. Application to the brainstem ascending arousal system and corticothalamic dynamics yield quantitative agreement with observed sleep-wake dynamics, EEG phenomena, and a range of other measures.
