Decoherence due to controlled baths

Understanding decoherence is central to the description of the crossover between quantum and classical behaviour and it is a crucial issue for the successful implementation of quantum information processing. Although desirable, it is not always possible to fully characterize the bath and therefore it is necessary to resort to ingenious modelizations. Paradigmatic models represent the environment as a set of harmonic oscillators or spin-1/2 particles. I will present e a new class of spin baths which can be exactly solvable and show how to realize them by means of optical lattices.
