Multiferroic BiMn2O5 in single phase polycrystalline has been synthesized using conventional solid state reaction method. Magnetic and dielectric properties investigated over the temperature range 4.2 K - 200 K, shows that the antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric transition temperatures (i.e. TN and TC) are in good agreement with the reported results. We present the X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) at the oxygen K edge and Mn L3,2 edge. The XAS pattern reveals that Mn in BiMn2O5 is having mixed valence state i.e. 4+ and 3+, where probability of Mn in 4+ state is more, which explicitly affects the ratio of Mn4+ to Mn3+, responsible for the magnetic ordering in the system at low temperatures. |
