Metal-insulator transitions and linear-dichroic x-ray absorption spectra in transition-metal compounds

In this talk, the metal-insulator transitions (MIT) in VO2, Ti2O3 and BaVS3 are discussed with multi-band Hubbard models using the exact diagonalization techniques. Although the MIT in these d1 systems are not accompanied by long-range magnetic ordering, abrupt changes in short-range spin and orbital correlations caused by strong electron-lattice coupling are considered to be essential for the MIT. Linear dichroic 2p x-ray absorption spectra are very sensitive probe to detect such changes in orbital occupations and the spectra expected from the theory will be presented.
