Excitation dynamics and counting statistics of Rydberg atoms in ultra-cold gases

The high densities achievable in ultra-cold atomic gases make it possible to study Rydberg excitations in the strongly interacting regime. In my talk I will present experiments with Rydberg atoms in magneto-optical traps, Bose condensates and condensates in optical lattices in which we observed and measured the effects of these interactions. The dipole blockade due to the interactions manifests itself both in the number of Rydberg atoms that can be excited in a given volume as well as in the counting statics.
