In this talk we will present an overview of the instabilities exhibited by delay-synchronized semiconductor lasers, the characteristics of the ensuing lag-synchronization regimes, and the relevance that these studies might have in other delay-coupled systems in nature. We will also describe recent experimental results that address the question of how leader-laggard dynamics emerges in coupled lasers. According to these results, leader-laggard alternance emerges through a quasiperiodic state. We will also discuss methods to control the lag time. In particular, we will introduce recent results showing that applying a common noise to the injection current of the lasers leads also to a zero lag. Finally, we will describe the effect of coupling between multiple delayed paths in the unidirectional communication between two lasers.
