Synchronization of chaotic oscillators with time-delayed coupling

We report on complete and anticipating chaotic synchronization of two delay-coupled Rössler systems in both simulation and experiment. We show that both kinds of synchronization depend on exactly the same transversal dynamics. The delay term in the transversal equation cannot stabilize the synchronized state when the delay time exceeds some critical value. We compare this maximum delay time with the corresponding Lyapunov time and discuss the mechanisms leading to destabilization in terms of a new measure which is similar to an autocorrelation function. This tool allows us to estimate the transversal stability in terms of properties of a single free-running system. The validity of our estimation is cross-checked by numerical simulations of other systems.
