Information delays in large interconnected systems can lead unexpected spatiotemporal dynamics. Recent results on car-following models with reaction-time delays will be presented for both human driven and robotic vehicles. It will be shown that the delays can significantly influence the qualitative dynamics of vehicle systems at the linear and nonlinear levels. Similarities between the oscillations seen in vehicular traffic and in gene regulatory networks will also be pointed out.
