In this talk I will review a number of examples where a Hamiltonian or a more general conservative dynamical system is embeded in a higher dimensional dissipative one. The examples include the dynamics of finite size bodies immersed in fluid flows, the spin-orbit synchronized motion of satellites, planets and binary stars, etc. I will submit that this type of systems are endowed with a number of special common features that make them worth to be viewed and studied as a separate class of dynamics.
