International School and Workshop on 'Dynamics of Inertial Particles: From Ocean and Atmosphere to Planets'

September 1 - 26, 2008

Scientific Coordinators:
Eberhard Bodenschatz (MPI Göttingen, Germany)
Ulrike Feudel (Universität Oldenburg, Germany)
Tamás Tél ( Eötvös Loránd University, Hungary)

Organisation:
Renate Seidel (MPI PKS Dresden, Germany)

The goal of this workshop is to bring together scientists from various fields, like theoretical physics, exeprimental fluid dynamics, meteorology/cloud physics, planet formation, marine ecology, oceanography, engineering and chemistry who investigate the advection of active and passive finite size particles in fluid flows. By stimulating the discussion about common methods and analogies the program will bridge and unite the different disciplines to initiate joint interdisciplinary projects. The event contains three weeks of an intense summer-school type program for PhD students and young researchers, where invited lecturers will teach training courses on the subject. The school program will contain introductory lectures as well as more advanced lectures which will address both methodological problems and applications. Furthermore there will be amply time for discussion, particularly to facilitate joint work of young researchers with senior scientists. In the third week of the event specialists in the aforementioned fields will gather to discuss the current state of the art in the study of finite size, inertial particles in ordered, disordered and turbulent flows.
