We examine the consistency of the Gibbs canonical ensemble as a representation for the mass flux fluctuations when the large scale forcing is time dependent.
A cloud resolving simulation (CRM) with interactive radiation code and fixed imposed surface temperature is used to mimic the diurnal forcing over ocean.
We show the Gibbs theory is capable in reproducing the qualitative features of the variability however systematic deviations are detected. By quantifying the spatial distribution of the clouds we suggest that clustering effects are causing the deviations.
