Dissipation in microscale sliding of metal surfaces

In most friction force microscopy experiments the measured dissipation is generated by jumps of the tip through the potential energy landscape and by electronic excitations. We have performed experiments at larger normal forces (mN to N) where additional energy dissipation channels like plastic deformation and wear particle generation have to be considered. In this presentation we will present examples of these friction generation mechanisms and discuss their consequences.
