Control of atomic friction

Atomic friction processes are studied by force microscopy under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Parameters, such as normal force and velocity, are varied to investigate the influence on atomic friction. The transition between atomic-scale stick slip and smooth sliding is observed by the control of normal forces. Actuation of nano-contacts give the opportunity to switch quickly between the stick-slip regime and the "superlubricity" regime.
