The structure of dynamical fluctuations in mesoscopic nonequilibrium steady states

We give the general and explicit structure of the functional governing the joint occupation-current fluctuations for Markov jump processes in a nonequilibrium steady state. A physical assumption is that the process satisfies a local detailed balance condition such as typical for stochastic lattice gases. We identify the entropy current and the 'traffic' between the states as extra terms in the fluctuation functional with respect to the equilibrium dynamics. As a simple application, we discuss the fluctuation origin of the minimum/maximum entropy production principles close to equilibrium. [In collaboration with C. Maes.]
