Counting single electrons: from shot-noise to self-interference of electrons

Counting individual electrons traversing quantum dot systems has become a standard technique to measure current and noise with unprecedented precision. It also serves as the basis for non-invasive time-resolved measurements. In this talk an overview of recent experiments will be given and future perspectives of the method will be discussed.
