We study the effect of electronic and magnetic instabilities on systems that are in the proximity to a superconducting state. Using Raman scattering phonon anomalies and the evolution of electronic scattering is investigated as function of doping in the cobaltates NaxCoO2 and different Fe-pnictides. We demonstrate the unique sensitivity of optical phonons as a probe of unconventional spin and electronic states.
