We formulate a variational approach to the non equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated electron system based on a time dependent Gutzwiller ansatz. We apply this method to the problem of a quantum quench in the Hubbard Model and find at half filling two regimes in the dynamics, separated by a sharp transition where a characteristic time scale diverges. This transition turns into a crossover at any finite doping. We discuss the role of quantum fluctuations beyond mean field using a suitable slave spin representation of the model. |
