The recently developed multi-band Gutzwiller variational theory allows to study the interplay between complex atomic correlations and the itinerancy of electrons in a crystal. It therefore provides a powerful tool for the investigation of real materials with medium to strong electronic correlations. In my presentation, I will give an overview of this method and discuss results on the electronic and magnetic properties of the transition metals Nickel and Iron. I will focus in particular on the physical effects of the spin-orbit coupling in these materials.
