A mesocsopic model describing spatial separation of granular material will be discussed. In this dynamical model, in a certain range of parameters spontaneous symmetry breaking takes place and equipartitioning of the granular material into two or more compartments isbroken. Both dynamical and stationary properties of the model will be analyzed and its predictions compared with experimental data. Relations with the so-called zero-range stochastic processes will be discussed.
