Mechanism of phase transition in locally coupled oscillators

We report the existence of the phase transition during emergence of synchronization in a one-dimensional array of bidirectionally coupled oscillators. We show that this phase transition occurs in systems in which, for some coupling strengths, the response time to signals coming from the adjacent sites is larger than the refractory period. We find the phase transition in non-autonomous excitable systems driven by noise as well as in autonomous chaotic oscillators.
