Mechanical properties of coupled hair bundles

Hair bundles are the mechano-electrical transducer in both the auditory and the vestibular system in humans and a lot of animals. In contrast to being purely passive resonators it is known that hair bundles possess the ability to amplify weak stimuli by means of an active process. Taking as our starting point an existing stochastic model for this active hair bundle motility we want to understand what collective effects emerge when an array of hair bundles is coupled via an overlying structure such as a gelatinous membrane.
