The degree of synchronous spiking in a population offers an additional dimension for encoding stimuli. I present an example from weakly-electric fish where communication signals either desynchronize or synchronize the population of electroreceptor neurons. Based on these findings I then investigate the role of noise in forming a synchrony code with integrate-and-fire type model neurons.
