We consider theoretically and numerically the effect of common noise on identical and nearly identical nonlinear oscillators and show that synchronization sets on provided the largest Lyapunov exponent is negative. We also demonstrate that sufficiently strong noise may lead to desynchronization. The relevance of this for noise-driven neurons is discussed.
