Spatial, dynamical and spatiotemporal heterogeneities in granular media

In this talk, I'll provide an overview of some recent results on heterogeneities in granular media. In the context of spatial heterogeneities, I'll first discuss bridges, force chains and possible links between them -- special mention will be made of the role of dimensionality here. Next, in the context of dynamical heterogeneities, I'll suggest that analogies may be drawn between a wide range of soft matter systems from granular media through pastes to glasses, to learn more about each one. Finally, I'll review a model of spatiotemporal heterogeneities in a granular column, and suggest, in the context of experimental results, that many of its predictions are more general than its dimensionality may suggest.
