Stranger than friction: Micromechanics of granular failure

We report on recent findings on granular failure in the presence and absence of strain localization in densely-packed, cohesionless systems. Commonalities and differences in force chain evolution in 2D versus 3D systems are explored. Overlaid information on contact network evolution uncover details of self-organization in the lead up to and during failure.
