Self-assembly outside of equilibrium: from model systems to simple devices and swarms

Dynamic self-assembly (DySA) is fascinating for the richness of physical behaviors it can display as well as for potential applications in 'smart' materials and reconfigurable devices. In my talk, I will discuss two mesoscopic and one nanoscopic system exhibiting DySA under well-controlled laboratory conditions. These systems provide fundamental insights into non-equilibrium self-assembly and illustrate heuristic design rules that can be used to elicit desired, non-trivial behaviors. I will discuss how these rules can be used to complexify the DySA ensembles to ultimately obtain self-assembling micromachines, artificial swarms and self-erasable displays.
