Resonant processes in the scattering of Bose-Einstein condensates offer intriguing possibilities such as the spectroscopy of bound states and Fano reflection resonances. The origin of these phenomena is the nonlinearity of the matter-waves due to mean-field interactions. We critically examine the validity of the mean-field approach and its extensions by complex scaling on the example of decay by tunneling into a continuum.
