Abstract:
We discuss a novel realization of the parity anomaly [F. D. M. Haldane,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 2015 (1988)] leading to an extrinsic quantum spin
Hall effect in graphene induced by extended defects such as lattice
termination supporting localized zero-energy modes. Apart from the spin
conductance quantization the spin Hall transition manifests itselfs as a
singular behavior of the tunneling density of states.
