Single spins on surfaces

Using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we study single spins in form of magnetic atoms and magnetic molecules on surfaces. The observed ground state and spin dynamics is related to a complex interplay between the magnetic anisotropy and the hybridization to the electron bath of the substrate. For large coupling or small anisotropy, we observe a Kondo resonance, for high anisotropy or low coupling inelastic spin excitations. From inelastic excitations, the magnetic anisotropy and the life time of the ground state and excited states can be deduced.
