In this talk, I discuss a new approach to creating quantum condensates, using localized excitons in microcavities. This approach has been proposed theoretically [P. R. Eastham and R. T. Phillips, arxiv:0708.2009], and is now being developed experimentally in Cambridge.
The key to this approach is to use a tailored laser pulse to directly create a cold (1K) exciton population. I argue that, in such a cold exciton population, the photon-mediated interactions lead to new soft modes, which in turn lead to the formation of quantum condensates. I will compare and contrast such a dynamical condensation phenomenon with both conventional lasing, and equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation. |
