What has the physics of quantum impurities to do with concentrated condensed matter systems? In particular for heavy fermion compounds it was realised very early that many of their anomalous properties can be understood by treating the concentrated compound as a coherent collection of independent Kondo impurities. This rather surprising phenomenological finding has during the past ten years obtained a formal justification by a new and very fruitful concept of many-body theory, the so-called dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). In my lecture I will present a comprehensive introduction into the motivation of this approach and how it eventually relates to the physics of quantum impurity systems. I will discuss some selected results for an old companion, the Hubbard model, and more complex applications as well as novel developments.
