The problem of the single magnetic impurity in a metal host is a paradigm of many body physics in electronic systems. Only recently has it become possible to study single magnetic impurities at metal surfaces using Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS). Co adatoms on metal surfaces show the signature of the Kondo resonance in the spectroscopy signal. This allows to determine on a local scale key properties of the interacting system, namely the Kondo temperature and scattering phase shifts. In this talk the interaction of Co adatoms with various substrates and different chemical surroundings is discussed. It is shown that the vicinity of the magnetic impurity greatly influences the Kondo temperature of the system.
