We discuss how to reduce the complexity of a spatially extended dissipative system on the example of a discharge system. The latter exhibits the formation of dissipative solitons in the form of current spots. Starting from the basic discharge equations we systematically derive the reduced model and quantitatively compare the corresponding solutions with the numerical solutions of the original system. We also discuss "slow" physical phenomena that can be properly investigated only within the reduced equations, e.g., the expansion of the spots and the velocity selection problem.
