Dissipative solitons arrear as a generic structure in a large variety of dissipative, spatially extended nonlinear systems. As they are strongly nonlinear structures with high amplitude that are usually generated in subcritical bifurcations, their formation cannot be understood in terms of a perturbation approach. Consequently, a systematic understanding of the mechanisms of soliton formation and stabilization is still lacking. On this poster, we will give an overview on these mechanisms we found in different systems allowing for the formation of dissipative solitons, with particular emphasis on our new results in reaction-diffusion systems. Furthermore, different types of destabilization of stationary dissipative solitons leading to dynamical phenomena are discussed.
