Soliton-radiation beat analysis

A new method is introduced which allows to extract information on soliton content (number, power) in complicated cases of pulse propagation in optical fiber. The new method is physically intuitive; it works on numerical propagation data and analyzes the interference between solitons and dispersive radiation. In known cases it reproduces Inverse Scattering Transform (IST) results, but other than IST, its applicability is not restricted to integrable systems. As an example, in a dispersion-managed fiber where IST totally fails we could demonstrate the existence, and even determine the parameters, of an N=2 soliton which was difficult to pin down with previous art.
