Interaction of adaptation and epithelial oscillations in ampullary electroreceptors

Peripheral ampullary electroreceptors of sharks, rays and some freshwater fish exhibit spontaneous oscillations in their sensory epithelium. At the same time, primary electroreceptor afferents are characterized by a tonic firing, adapting to external thermal and electrical stimuli. Using computational methods we discuss how epithelial oscillations affect background firing activity of primary afferent neurons and shape responses to external electric stimuli.
