We study the 5d-based double perovskite material Ba2FeReO6 where one of the two sublattices is a 5d-transition metal ion (Re) with strong spin orbit coupling and the other sublattice is a 3d-transition metal ion (Fe). Such double perovskites are useful since they exhibit high Curie temperature ferrimagnetism. We explore a local moment approach to the magnetism in these systems, and show that the low energy spin fluctuations involve spin-orbit coupled moments. The obtained spin dynamics is shown to be consistent with powder inelastic neutron scattering data on Ba2FeReO6, enabling one to estimate moment sizes and the strength of exchange interactions. We also explore the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the electronic states and transport in Ba2FeReO6.
