The bandstructure for a monolayer of the sodium iridate compound Na2IrO3 exhibits the quantum spin Hall effect. We investigate the additional effect of electron correlations in this system ("sodium iridate Hubbard model"). The quantum spin Hall phase turns out to be robust up to moderate interaction strength. In the strong coupling limit, we derive a spin Hamiltonian which is reminiscent of the Kitaev model and compute the magnetic susceptibilities using a functional RG approach. We also investigate the limit of infinitely strong spin orbit coupling leading to a triangular flux lattice Hubbard model.
