Hydraulic jumps are seen in kitchen sinks, spillway of dams,river-bends etc. While it is still not possible to calculate precisely the position and magnitude of the jump as a function of the flow rate and the Reynold's number of the impinging flow,it is possible to obtain certain scaling laws. We will discuss the derivation of these scaling laws from the point of view of dynamics .This will link this seemingly everyday problem to a problem in analogue gravity.A consequent prediction has been observed in a recent experiment.
