The talk deals with basic properties of matter waves in external fields. The theoretical approach is used to analyze
1) photodetachment of negative ions,
2) tunneling waves in scanning tunneling microscopy and,
3) the strange behavior of a dilute fermi gas in crossed electric and magnetic fields.
