This focus workshop is devoted to the latest developments in understanding complex systems with the help of tools and concepts from Synergetics. It is still one of the big challenges to understand the macroscopic behavior of complex systems composed of many interacting subsystems driven into nonequilibrium situations.

In this seminar we plan to present and discuss the newest concepts for handling complex systems. In particular, we will focus on stochastic concepts with its applications in time-series analysis and anomalous transport, on spontaneous structure formation and on the problem of turbulence. Insights into these fields, which may appear unconnected to the non-expert, are based on common ideas founded in Synergetics. In particular we will focus on the work of Rudolf Friedrich, who passed away very unexpectedly last year. His work was very interdisciplinary, bridging pure theory with experimental and technical applications.
