We will present a status report of our current studies in the field of (sub)picosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction / scattering experiments on chromophoric systems (like electron transfer systems or isomerising systems) and discuss their structural response function with respect to their (time-dependent) optical properties. In this context, particular emphasis will be given on the interaction of ultrafast, highly intense FEL radiation with molecular systems in the solid state. We will discuss the possibility of utilizing FEL soft x-ray radiation for inducing chemical reactions and its influence on the chemical product distribution during a reaction course. Experimental results will be compared to investigations with time-resolved soft x-ray radiation generated in a plasma source.
